green arrow A new bachelor's degree program at Paris Descartes University

In September 2011, Paris Descartes University has welcomed the inaugural entering class of students into the Frontiers in Life Sciences Bachelor program. The FdV Bachelor program is unique and exceptional with respect to both its academic curriculum and educational approach.

The FdV Bachelor Program has been mentionned in articles in Le Monde, La Recherche and the Ministry of Research and Superieur education (video 11'20).

Licence Frontières du Vivant

The Frontiers in Life Sciences Bachelor program offers general and interdisciplinary undergraduate scientific education and training.

It aims at providing students with a solid scientific culture in several disciplines (mathematics, physics, chemistry, biology, computer science,) enabling them to pursue studies in domains of their choice.

Licence Frontières du Vivant

The Frontiers in Life Sciences Bachelor program places great emphasis on project-oriented training and on exploring various professional environments (laboratories, enterprises, associations, etc...) During the three-year program, FdV Bachelor students become increasingly capable of taking on greater individual responsibility, becoming autonomous, and managing their own projects. Doing research enables FdV Bachelor students to acquire such capacities as:

- Seeking, organizing, and analyzing information
- Creating new tools
- Working in a group (teamwork)
- Creating new content (texts, web pages, videos, etc...)

One of the specificities of the FdV Bachelor program is that it places as much emphasis on the acquisition of competence as it does on the acquisition of knowledge.

Lors de leur première année, les étudiants auront suivi :
- Une semaine d'initiation à la recherche à Bidart (Pays Basque) avec de nombreuses activités de travail en groupe, de collaboration, de découverte des étapes du questionnement scientifique et des approches expérimentales.
- Une semaine de stage en conclusion de l'Unité d'Enseignement (UE) "Professionnalisation".
- Une semaine de Travaux Pratiques (TP) Interdisciplinaires autour d'expériences de plusieurs jours en laboratoire, croisant les disciplines et les acquis des enseignements dispensés.
- Une deuxième semaine de stage au second semestre

Licence Frontières du Vivant Frontiers in Life Sciences students benefit from teaching in small groups (the first entering class will consist of around thirty students) and from customized attention by their professors and monitors.

The latter may be graduate students or professionals with scientific training, which allows students to become familiar with various perspectives for future study and professional opportunities.

green arrow Support and prospects

The Bettencourt Schueller Foundation provides financing for the Frontiers in Life Sciences Bachelor program and for its innovative educational activities. Funding by the Foundation enables FdV to host students and faculty in the at the Center for Interdisciplinary Research (Centre de Recherches Interdisciplinaires, CRI), whose dedicated premises located in the center of Paris are organized to maximize interaction among academic disciplines.

FdV is a pilot project at Paris Descartes University that originated in the Sorbonne Paris Cité Research and Teaching Focus (Pôle de Recherche et d'Enseignement Supérieure, PRES) whose program will continue to develop over the coming years.
